Ontario Greenhouse Shippers Sign On with HarvestMark

LEAMINGTON, Ontario - Two Canadian greenhouse produce shippers are using HarvestMark for traceability for the first time this year.

Jem-D International and Exeter-based Huron Produce Ltd. are both using the system, a product of HarvestMark Inc., Trimble, Sunnyvale, CA.

Jem-D has been using HarvestMark at its greenhouse operations in Mexico this year, but is beginning to incorporate it at its Ontario facilities just this spring, said Kyle Moynahan, sales.

“We get some demand from our retailers,” Moynahan said. “They really value that traceability, and it’s something we value as well.”

The HarvestMark system includes an entire traceability program that puts PTI-compliant labels on individual clamshells, bags and cases of produce.

Through the HarvestMark codes carried on the items, consumers can access information about their purchases from Harvestmark.com, including variety, origin, food safety notices and product information.

The HarvestMark system is also compliant with the Produce Traceability Initiative.

Huron plans to use the system for its peppers, mini cucumbers and beefsteak and on-the-vine tomatoes, according to the release.

Jem-D is using it for packaged peppers, mini cucumbers and beefsteak and cocktail tomatoes.
